Catenary Pole Attachments

This part of my project entails the creation of four catenary pole attachments, to be placed at the West Side Avenue Station along the tracks of the Hudson-Bergen Light Rail Transit System. My catenary pole attachments will provide a somewhat symmetric visual frame to the platform entrance, fanning out from either side of the arriving and departing tracks. These four objects would be modeled from images of bird wings, silhouetting the wing forms from aves of the New Jersey region. Together these forms would provide a natural visual reference for this location. The wings would also allude to the lithe streamlined forms of the transit vehicles themselves and the notion of speed of transport.

Pedestrian Bridge Panels

West Side Avenue Bridge Panels

Four visual elements will be installed on the interior truss of the West Side Avenue Bridge. These panels will be suspended under the truss structure in a position that will afford viewing from both sides. The imagery used for these elements will relate to the passage of pedestrians within the tunnel relative to their direction of travel.

West Side Avenue Station Parking Lot Markers

The ten parking lot markers prepared for this station will employ images accumulated during a survey of the site, to be conducted at the beginning of this project. To undertake this survey I will arrange meetings with individuals from businesses and organizations resident in the area. During these meetings I will photograph or draw tools, equipment, books, structures and clothing which help identify the location. These meetings would include, but would not be limited to individuals employed at Jersey City State College; transit employees (bus drivers, LRT workers and operatives of the elevated railroad); local Fire or Police Officials; area stores, libraries or schools.
