The Waterline Project
This artwork is one of three outdoor sculptures from The Waterline Project for the City of Amsterdam. These works address the unique relationship of the Amsterdam to earth, sea and sky by virtue of its location two to five meters below sea level.
This work is the title piece of the exhibition and is constructed of steel, fiberglass, wood, plexiglass, organic materials and light elements which are placed above the viewer, at a theoretical sea level. Apertures in this work transmits daylight, permitting a mirror below the sculpture to reflect the sky.
Changing light conditions alter the appearance of all sculptures throughout the day, highlighting their elements against the natural surroundings. The works come to life in twilight and early evening hours when light level changes are greatest and the silhouettes of the constructions mask the sky.
The Waterline Project, was installed on the grounds of the Dutch foundation Artgarden. It is shown here as installed at the Katonah Museum of Art in Katonah, New York.
